Interview with an electrical design engineer

1. How long have you been designing?
I've been designing for 6 years, since 2012. He started as a student while working as an electrical engineer.
2. How does your work begin?
Work, as a rule, begins with communication with a potential customer. It is necessary to understand what he wants to get in the end result. It is necessary to collect the initial data, make a list of necessary works, sections of the project. After that it is necessary to provide a TOR in which all the features of the work will be described. The technical task can be carried out in the form of a kind of questionnaire, which specifies design features, equipment used, availability of approvals, etc. For example, in the TOR may be prescribed: "to provide for the intersection of the street by the Russian method of HDD, coupler to provide for Raychem, the cable of the Energokabel plant". Recently there was a project: the customer came with a request to design a 35 kV overhead transmission line, the transmitted power is 1MW. In the process of the pre-project survey, it was concluded that it is much easier to build a 35 kV cable line using a cable made of cross-linked polyethylene. In the course of this project, several untypical solutions were envisaged: a branch from a 35 kV overhead line, a 35 kV overhead line link between a 35 kV cable line and 35 / 0.4 kV modular package transformer substation. All this was proposed to the customer and after approvals - development of working documentation.

3. What normative documentation do you use in the design process?
It all depends on the project. If these are external networks, everything begins with the Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation No. 87. If this is VL-10kV, 0.4kV, we look at the typical designs of the manufacturers, if the KL, the standard project A5-92. If the customer asks to make the layout of the power cabinet (ASU, SCHS) - GOST 32396-2013. For each section of the project documentation, its "normative" list. This list may take more than one page.

4. Do you agree on the design decisions that are being prepared, at what stage does it take place?
Of course, the coordination of design decisions takes place in the design process or, if there are ready solutions from practice, at the initial stage of the approval of TK. As a rule, the project is built on several key points, and the remaining (current) solutions are adjusted for them.

5. How do you choose brands of used equipment, materials?
The material used is coordinated with the customer at the initial stage. I can recommend the most optimal option, using the experience of past projects. Although there are exceptions. A recent project required 5 KTP 2х1000 10 / 0,4 at one site. He started designing two two-circuit VLZ-10kV, in parallel he sent out requests for the price from various manufacturers of KTP, after that it was transferred to the customer, and he decided which producer to choose, which took quite a long time, but this is more an exception than the rule.

6. Where do you usually look for and find design orders?
Are there ways to find customers? Projects on external networks, as a rule, come from former colleagues, or by word of mouth. Once a customer came to me, because I saw my project in an energy sales company, I liked the quality - I turned. For more specialized orders - the Internet, labor exchanges, specialized forums.
