Comparison of ClearSCADA, CITECT and WINCC

ClearSCADA&CITECT&WINCC

This article compares three different SCADA systems (ClearSCADA&CITECT&WINCC) in conjunction with mid-level simulators (PLCs). The videos below provide step-by-step instructions for setting up the above software products to communicate with simulators using the Modbus protocol.

Having experience with InTouch, TraceMode, Masterskada, this task does not seem too difficult and spurs purely technical interest. For its implementation, three VMware Workstation Pro V12 virtual machines are used, on which Windows7 Professional 32bit is installed, the ClearScada package, CITECT 8.0 (2016), WINCC 7.4, Modbus simulator.

ClearSCADA:

Installation. In fact, the distribution kit can only be downloaded upon request from an authorized dealer for a specific object. In the course of independent development of the demo version of the software product, it becomes clear that not all drivers are available. At startup, it swears that there is not enough license, but does not specify which one. Installing in Full mode does not install all available drivers, Modbus must be added as an optional component.

I want to note right away that already from the moment the ClearScada 2017 distributions were requested, there was a feeling of some closeness and / or low prevalence of this product. This opinion arises after the experience of independent search on the Internet for suitable examples. There are very few of them. What is recorded in the videos posted on the network has a discrepancy with the software components installed on my computer. That is, there are certain components in the video example, but they are not in the installed software.
ClearScada 2017 is a brand of Schneider Electric, but this company itself does not sell, support or promote this software product on the Russian market. The exclusive supplier of the product is PLC-Systems, which also provides technical advice to integrators of its products. I am not such an integrator, so I had to figure it out on my own. It didn't turn out quite the way it was originally planned. I was able to set up communication only via the Modbus over TCP protocol (planned Modbus TCP).

Final opinion: ClearScada is a complete horror. The interface is not intuitive. Many auxiliary programs, the purpose of which is difficult to understand. Almost complete lack of documentation. Uninformative reference. Even the training videos in the kit (4pcs) do not allow you to repeat the steps due to the difference in the names of the drivers. Perhaps this is due to the change of releases, but this is neither hot nor cold.

CITECT 8.0 (2016):

Installation. Downloaded from scada.ru, you need to add IIS services before installation. The demo version seems to be full-fledged, it works for a limited time, which did not interfere with mastering the connection.

The Citect 8.0 (2016) brand is also owned by Schneider Electric. Official distributor - JSC "RTsoft".

Final opinion: a kind of Russian-language interface, in which at first you get confused, since all the help is in English. There is documentation, but for older versions that describe a different interface (the old one was more understandable). Such a good reference, you can feel the Australian approach. A cool compiler with an indication of the location of the error and a clear description. There are a lot of Modbus TCP varieties (more than 10), which greatly complicates the choice of the required one (MODNET1, MODNET10 or MODNET20), frame differences, register addressing, etc.

WINCC 7.4:

Installation. Downloaded from the net, you need to add IIS services before installation. I met some problems with licensing through the EKB activator. With the Russian encoding, at the installation stage, krakozyabry appeared every now and then, but this does not spoil the overall feeling.

The WinCC brand is owned by SIEMENS. There are a lot of distributors in Russia.

Final opinion: logical, visual interface. It is not necessary to be able to program at all, it can serve as a good start-up for students. A lot of available information in the form of manuals (including in Russian), and answers on the forums. There are almost no problems when working with the software product, except for a trifle with the display of the Russian encoding on the mnemonic diagram (the signs "??????"), but the solution is quickly found in search engines.

By repeating the setup steps presented in the videos, you will be able to save some time during the initial development of the indicated software products. If you find inaccuracies in the description or you need additional clarification, there is a comment box (feedback) at the bottom of the article, I will try to answer everyone.
